Interventional Radiology

Available at the Westmoreland and Latrobe Hospital campuses, this newest area of radiology allows radiologists to specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments using image guidance that, in particular instances, replaces the need for open surgery. Since there are no large incisions, there is less pain, less risk and shorter recovery time for many patients.

Common procedures include:

  • Angiography
  • Stents and angioplasties
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty
  • TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) – Improves blood flow and prevents hemorrhage in patients with severe liver disease
  • Venous ablation
  • Radio frequency ablation (RFA)
  • Vein thrombolysis
  • Central venous access
  • Percutaneous feeding tubes
  • Uterine fibroid embolization
  • Aneurysm coiling
  • Pain injections
  • And more
