Excela Health Emergency Departments Stand Ready to Serve
Last updated: April 24, 2020
While the COVID-19 pandemic has focused attention on the fight against
the disease, patients in our region still require emergency medical care
for conditions and injuries not related to the virus. Heart attacks, strokes
and other serious medical issues haven’t stopped during the outbreak.
And we haven’t stopped treating them.
Excela Health reminds everyone that our Emergency Departments at Westmoreland,
Frick and Latrobe Hospitals stand ready to provide the highest quality
emergency care for all patients needing it. And in a manner that places
the highest priority on protecting all of our patients during these difficult times.

In a medical emergency minutes matter. Choose an emergency department with
a fully staffed care team including emergency medicine specialists who are
supported by a full service hospital.
Excela health's three hospitals are the only designated primary stroke
centers in Westmoreland County and the county's only STEMI receiving centers
for the severest heart attack patients. And when you need it, our Heart
and Vascular Center at Excela Westmoreland hospital is backed by a full
service interventional cardiology program including cardiothoracic surgery.
We know that this is a stressful time for you and your family. Our goal
is to provide you with excellent emergency medical care. Board certified
emergency medicine physicians will oversee every aspect of your care and
treatment in the emergency department. In the course of your stay, you
may also see physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and technicians
all working together with the physicians and committed to providing you
the best possible care. All members of your care team will introduce themselves
and they will be wearing ID badges defining their role. Do not hesitate
to ask our staff members about their role in your care if you have any
questions.
Arrival
Your care begins as soon as you arrive! On arrival, a team member will
ask you a few questions and take you directly to a treatment bed if one
is available. The team will begin treatment and testing according to established
medical guidelines based on the information that you provide. In cases
in which a bed is not available, you may be directed to the waiting area
for a brief period. We will do all that we can to keep you comfortable
and get you into the treatment area as soon as a bed is available.
Your Medical Exam
As part of your care, you have the right to an appropriate medical screening
exam by a medical professional to the extent that we can provide such
care. All emergency medical conditions will receive whatever treatment
the staff and facilities have available that is necessary to stabilize
the condition. If the hospital lacks certain capabilities to stabilize
that condition we will arrange for transportation to a facility that does.
You will receive these services regardless of your ability to pay. You
do not need to have medical insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid to get emergency
medical care.
Why Are You Waiting?
Our goal is to provide you the best possible care as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, you may feel that you are waiting longer than you would
like. Critically ill or injured patients often arrive which may temporarily
occupy our nurses and doctors. We are sorry for any delays that occur
but promise every patient the same level of attention. Our team will try
to keep you informed of any delays but you are always welcome to inquire
if you feel that the wait is unusually long. Results of lab tests and
x-rays may take some time to return. During your waiting, our team is
committed to keeping you comfortable and monitoring your response to treatment.
Communication
Our staff is committed to keeping you well informed about your care. We
will do our very best to keep you updated and answer any questions that
you or your family have. We encourage you to ask questions and feel free
to express any concerns to our ED care team throughout your stay. If any
member of the team is unable to address your concerns, please ask to speak
with the emergency department physician, clinical coordinator, or charge nurse.
IF AT ANY TIME YOU FEEL THAT YOUR CONDITION IS WORSENING, PLEASE NOTIFY
YOUR NURSE IMMEDIATELY.
