Impella 5.5 Pump Use in Heart Failure

The Impella 5.5 is surgically implanted heart pump used to treat acute heart failure associated with acute cardiac pathologies (i.e. acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis or heart failure following or prior to cardiac surgery) by unloading the left ventricle, reducing ventricular work and providing the circulatory support necessary to allow for recovery and early assessment of residual myocardial function. It may also be used to treat acute or chronic heart failure as a bridge to durable mechanical support or heart transplantation. It typically provides one to three weeks of support and optimizes a patient’s recovery. Once the heart has recovered, the device will be removed, prior to discharge from the hospital.

Heart failure is a serious condition that can cause a variety of symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and feet. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and valve disease. When the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs, it can lead to organ damage and other serious complications.

The Impella 5.5 is a small pump that is implanted through a catheter in the axillary artery in the upper body/shoulder area. This placement allows a patient to have better range of motion with the device in place, allowing for early rehabilitation during their hospital stay.

Once in place, it helps the heart pump blood by drawing blood from the left ventricle and expelling it into the aorta, increasing the amount of blood that is circulated throughout the body. The device can provide up to 5.5 liters of blood flow per minute, making it an effective option for patients with severe heart failure. The Impella 5.5 is typically used in conjunction with other treatments for heart failure, such as medications and lifestyle changes. It can be a temporary solution while a patient awaits heart transplantation or as a bridge to recovery after heart surgery.

Overall, the Impella 5.5 is a promising technology for the treatment of heart failure, offering a minimally invasive option for patients who may not be candidates for other forms of treatment. As with any medical procedure, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider to determine if Impella 5.5 is a suitable option for an individual's specific needs and medical history.
