When I started looking for residencies in family medicine, it was important to me that the residency be invested in the education, well-being, and growth of their residents. I wanted a program that was engaged in the community and the local area and who viewed each other as, and encouraged the feeling of, "family."

Alan McGaughran, MD

I came to Latrobe Hospital and the Residency program in 1998 after five years in a private practice, some ER work and prior to that, a 3 year stint in the Air Force Medical Corp. I have been at Saltsburg Family Practice since 2005. I was involved in the development of and now ongoing supervision of the minor surgery/procedures clinic, which gives the residents more practical experience with minor surgery in their third year. My office patient population tends to be medically complex older adults, though I do enjoy dealing with musculoskeletal and dermatologic issues in particular.

The residency program at Latrobe provides me the opportunity to further pursue my interests in family medicine: sports medicine, caring for a rural population, point of care ultrasound, medical assisted treatment, and osteopathic manipulation treatment.

I am from a small town and my passion is rural family medicine; because Latrobe is an unopposed residency with multiple clinic options, I am able to experience my passion during my training. I love having the opportunity to give back to a community that reminds me so much of home, as it will be mine over the next few years.
