Excela Health Invites Community to Test Drive Surgical Robot, Learn More About Minimally Invasive Cancer Care Options

GREENSBURG, PA, November 1, 2022 …Robot-assisted surgery is the centerpiece of the Excela Health Surgical Institute, where surgeons utilize the innovative da Vinci robotic system to offer the latest in cancer care. Born out of the need for remote surgery in space or on the battlefield, robotic surgery has been available at Excela Health for more than a decade with its uses ever expanding to ensure the most advanced care is available locally.

The da Vinci system enables complex surgery in a variety of specialties using a minimally invasive approach. It helps Excela surgeons achieve greater precision, better range of motion and increased visibility in a variety of complex procedures, often with improved outcomes. Patients experience less pain and scarring from the smaller incisions, leading to a faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.

Using the da Vinci surgical system, the surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon manipulates the master controls below the display, and the system translates those hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.

The community is invited to Westmoreland Mall, Route 30 east of Greensburg, Thursday, November 17 to learn more about the various applications for robot-assisted surgery. Following a presentation at 8:30 a.m. in the mall Food Court by Excela Health, participants are invited to experience the da Vinci system first-hand. The program coincides with Excela’s popular Mall Walkers program held in cooperation with the mall.

Assisting with the program are general surgeon Ryan Abegglen, MD, urologist Geoffrey Bisignani, MD and thoracic surgeon Michael Szwerc, MD, FACS. In recognition of Novermber as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Szwerc’s remarks will key on the benefits of robot-assisted surgery in treating lung cancer.

The da Vinci robot demonstrations and hands-on opportunities will occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Old Navy wing on the mall’s ground floor.
