Leap Day Twice as Nice For Twins Delivered at Excela Health

GREENSBURG, PA, March 1, 2020 – Leap Day will always be twice as special for the Newcomer family of Unity Township, Westmoreland County.
Amanda and Brian Newcomer welcomed their first children, twins Wyatt James and
Emery Rose on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the Family Additions Maternity Center
at Excela Health Westmoreland in Greensburg.
The Leap Day babies were delivered by Cesarean section Saturday evening. Wyatt was
born at 8:52 p.m., weighs 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and measures 18 inches. His sister
Emery was born at 8:54 p.m., weighs 5 pounds, 5 ounces, and is 18 ¾ inches.
“We were due on March 2,” said Brian. “But her water broke yesterday and we ended
up getting a pleasant surprise. Well, two pleasant surprises.”
Grandparents are Terry and Diane Stephenson of Unity Township and James and
Janice Newcomer of Unity Township.
The family reports it will celebrate the babies’ future birthdays on February 28.
The siblings are Leaplings, a common nickname for Leap Day babies. The likelihood of
twins being born on Leap Day is 1 in 50,000 according to LeapYearDay.com. The odds
of being born on Leap Day are 1 in 1,461. Leap Day occurs every four years to align the
calendar with astronomical seasons, according to Almanac.com.
The family received a gift basket donated by the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary and
caps and onesies from Excela Health.
