Healthy Habits A-Z Program

Excela Health actively promotes important health messages through a variety of methods including school-based programs and a Speakers Bureau, among others. The desired result is to help individuals improve their physical, emotional and mental health behaviors as they learn to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Since 2017, Excela Health has facilitated the Healthy Habits A-Z program in health and wellness education classes throughout Westmoreland County school districts. This program focuses on the education and promotion of healthy eating/nutrition, exercise activity and heart attack and stroke prevention. Various education and presentation topics include:

  • The Nutrient is Right
  • The Golden Hour
  • The Importance of Eating Breakfast
  • The New Nutrition Facts Label
  • Rethink Your Drink (emphasis on sugar content in popular beverages and healthy alternatives)
  • Power Up with Protein
  • MyPlate
  • Eat the Rainbow
  • Hydration Station
  • Brain Health
  • Shake the Salt Habit
  • Heart Health
  • How to Pack a Healthy Lunch
  • Build Your Bones

Other topics are available upon request. This school-based program can be tailored to any health and wellness class/curriculum and is free of charge as a benefit to the community.

A series of educational presentations are also available to the adult population and can be tailored to specific groups and organizations. Topics can include:

Are You Smarter Than A Food Label?
This talk is based on the popular game show, Are You Smarter than A 5th Grader? This question and answer format focuses on the Nutrition Facts Food Label. Topics discussed include serving size, calories, the 5/20 rule, listed nutrients and current updates to the label.

Brain Fitness
This interactive game uses questions and activities to highlight the importance of age proofing our brains against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Topics discussed include the importance of sleep, physical activity, healthy diet, social interaction and stress management. Our Nutritionist brings the top 10 foods for brain health and discuss the benefits of each. Recipes are also included using several of these foods.

Love It or Lose It for Cardiovascular Health
This interactive game highlights 12 different foods and their benefits to a healthy heart…or not. Our Nutritionist showcases each food and then as a group discuss the proven health claims, beneficial nutrients and how to incorporate it into a healthy eating plan.

Golden Hour Bingo
This bingo game discusses the signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke, risk factors, diet, treatment and lifestyle changes.

5 Steps to a Healthy Heart
This lecture discusses how to prevent a heart attack through healthy eating and exercise.
